Coronavirus: Iran's deputy health minister tests positive as outbreak worsens - BBC News
Өдрийн өмнө
Several European countries have announced their first coronavirus cases, with all appearing to be linked to the growing outbreak in Italy. Austria, Croatia and Switzerland said the cases involved people who had been to Italy, as did Algeria in Africa. The first positive virus test has been recorded in Latin America - a Brazilian resident just returned from Italy. Italy has in recent days become Europe's worst-affected country, with more than 300 cases and 11 deaths. But its neighbours have decided closing borders would be "disproportionate". Health ministers from France, Germany, Italy and the EU Commission committed to keeping frontiers open at a meeting on Tuesday as new cases of the virus emerged throughout Europe and in central and southern Italy. "We're talking about a virus that doesn't respect borders," said Italian Health Minister Roberto Speranza. Please subscribe HERE bit.ly/1rbfUog Iran's deputy health minister and an MP have both tested positive for the new coronavirus, as it struggles to contain an outbreak that has killed 15. The country is one of three hot-spots outside China causing concern that the virus could be becoming a pandemic. The deputy minister, Iraj Harirchi, on Monday denied covering up the scale of the outbreak. He appeared in physical discomfort as he spoke to reporters. Iran has reported 95 cases, but the actual number is thought to be higher. The director general of the World Health Organization (WHO) has said the sudden increase in cases in countries outside China is "deeply concerning". US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Tuesday that Washington was concerned that Iran may have concealed "vital details" about its outbreak and urged all nations to "tell the truth about the coronavirus". #BBCOS #OutsideSourceBBC

Financial markets plunged again on Tuesday as investors continued to worry about the spread of the coronavirus. The Dow shed almost 900 points, falling more than 3% to close at 27,081. The S&P 500 also closed more than 3% lower, while the Nasdaq sank 2.8%, The declines followed drops overseas. In the UK, the FTSE 100 fell almost 2% to a 12-month low of 7,018, while Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 3.3%. Please subscribe HERE bit.ly/1rbfUog The human cost of the coronavirus outbreak is climbing across China and beyond. The economic cost is also mounting, mainly, but not only, in China. That damage is, for the most part, not due to the virus itself so much as efforts to prevent it spreading. There are strict restrictions on moving out of Wuhan, where the outbreak began, a city with a population of 11 million. The lockdown, also now extended to other parts of Hubei province, prevents business-related travel as well as the movement of goods and workers. Fear of the virus also means many people will choose to avoid activities they think might expose them to the risk of infection. #BBCOS #OutsideSourceBBC

After a week, it leads to shortness of breath and some patients require hospital treatment. Notably, the infection rarely seems to cause a runny nose or sneezing. The incubation period - between infection and showing any symptoms - lasts up to 14 days, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). But some researchers say it may be as long as 24 days. Chancellor Angela Merkel said there were many signs the attacker in the city of Hanau had acted out of racism. Federal prosecutors are treating the case as terrorism. Some of those killed were believed to be of Turkish origin. The 43-year-old suspect killed himself, police say. He was found dead at his home along with the body of his mother. Local media have identified the suspect as Tobias R, a German citizen. The Bild tabloid reports he had a firearms licence, and that ammunition and gun magazines were found in his car. Authorities are examining a video that appears to be from the suspect, posted online days before the attacks, in which he expresses right-wing conspiracy theories. Bild said he had also left a letter of confession. The attack comes amid growing concerns about far-right violence in Germany. Speaking in Berlin, Mrs Merkel said: "Racism is a poison. The former home secretary was appointed chancellor by Mr Johnson when he became prime minister in July. His resignation follows rumours of tensions between Mr Javid and the prime minister's senior adviser Dominic Cummings. "He has turned down the job of chancellor of the Exchequer," a source close to Mr Javid said. "The prime minister said he had to fire all his special advisers and replace them with Number 10 special advisers to make it one team. "The chancellor said no self-respecting minister would accept those terms." Please subscribe HERE bit.ly/1rbfUog

The largest coronavirus outbreak outside mainland China is not in a country, but on a cruise ship. It's been more than a week since the Diamond Princess went into lockdown, after a previous passenger tested positive for the virus after disembarking. With almost 500 out of 3,700 people on board tested, 174 people have now tested positive for coronavirus. Those still on board are in quarantine for another week. But it's not just the Diamond Princess. Please subscribe HERE bit.ly/1rbfUog On another cruise ship in Hong Kong, 3,600 passengers people were quarantined because of fears that people on board might have the virus. They were only allowed to disembark after tests came back negative. And a cruise ship carrying more than 1,450 passengers, which left Hong Kong on 1 February, was turned away from ports in Japan, Taiwan, Guam and the Philippines, despite having no infections on board. It has now been told it can dock in Cambodia. Cruise ships have for years been referred to as "floating Petri dishes" - places ripe for the exchange of germs, and the spreading of illness. #BBCOS #BBCOutsideSource

Mr Sanders declared the night "the beginning of the end" of Mr Trump. Success in New Hampshire - like Iowa - offers momentum for the race ahead. In China, there's been a huge outpouring of grief and anger at the treatment of a doctor, who tried to warn the world of the dangers of the coronavirus. Hundreds of millions of people have viewed social media posts about Dr Li Wen-Liang who's died after contracting the illness, while treating infected patients. He was censored by the authorities in the city of Wuhan, after raising the alarm back in December about the potential dangers of the new virus. The government has now sent officials to investigate how he was treated. As the coronavirus continues to spread, controls and restrictions are increasing right across China, where more than six hundred people have died, and another thirty one thousand have been infected. A British man on his honeymoon is among more than sixty people, who've tested positive for the virus on board a cruise ship in Japan. Alan Steele from Wolverhampton has been taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Of the 3700 people on board the 'Diamond Princess,' it is thought there are around eighty Britons, with the ship quarantined in Yokohama, Japan. All the passengers have been confined to their cabins, for the next fortnight. Tonight's BBC News at Ten is presented by Clive Myrie and he hears from the BBC's China correspondent Jon Sudworth in Beijing, the BBC’s Medical Correspondent, Fergus Walsh and the BBC’s Health Editor Hugh Pym.

Dr Li Wenliang has died - this is the man who became a hero in China after trying to warn the medical community about the coronavirus. He was told to be quiet by the authorities - before weeks later being diagnosed with the virus himself. BBC Chinese reports that Dr Li was declared dead on Thursday evening. But there's this too. "The news of his death triggered a huge wave of popular reaction on Weibo - China’s equivalent of Twitter. Journalists and doctors at the scene who do not want their names used, told the BBC that officials then decided to control the flow of information by ordering the doctor to be put back on life support and to change all official media reports from death to in critical condition." That attempt to shut down the story, looks to have failed - and official Chinese media are now again reporting the death of Dr Li. Please subscribe HERE bit.ly/1rbfUog #BBCOS #BBCOutsideSource

The death toll of the coronavirus has risen to 170 and with a confirmed case in Tibet, the virus has now spread to every region in mainland China. Chinese health authorities have said there were 7,711 confirmed cases in the country as of 29 January. Infections have also spread to at least 16 other countries. The World Health Organization (WHO) will meet on Thursday to discuss whether the virus constitutes a global health emergency. "In the last few days the progress of the virus, especially in some countries, especially human-to-human transmission, worries us," WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday, pointing to Germany, Vietnam and Japan. "Although the numbers outside China are still relatively small, they hold the potential for a much larger outbreak." Please subscribe HERE bit.ly/1rbfUog

Members of the European Parliament have overwhelmingly backed the terms of the UK's departure from the EU. MEPs ratified the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement by 621 votes to 49 following an emotional debate in Brussels. After the vote, MEPs marked the UK's exit by singing Auld Lang Syne. Several British MEPs said they hoped the UK would return one day although Eurosceptics, including the Brexit Party's Nigel Farage, used their final speeches to tear into the EU. Hundreds of British citizens, waiting to be flown home from the region of China worst-affected by the new Coronavirus, will be put in quarantine for two weeks on their return to the UK. Passengers will be asked to sign a contract agreeing to commit to what's called 'supported isolation' although the timing of the flight and the destination is not yet known. British Airways has suspended all direct flights to and from mainland China because of the outbreak. The virus which was first detected in the city of Wuhan has caused more than 130 deaths spreading from China and to at least 15 other countries. The World Health Organisation warned on Wednesday that the whole world needs to take action to stop the spread of the new virus. "Snotsicle" - distinctly unattractive masses of frozen snot - are just some of the challenges of doing science in a place as extreme as the Antarctic. Scientists fear the Thwaites Glacier could be beginning a process of catastrophic collapse. There is more than three metres of potential sea level rise in the ice of West Antarctica, enough to swamp many of the great cities of the world and drive hundreds of millions of people from their homes. The BBC's chief environment correspondent, Justin Rowlatt travelled with a team of scientists who are part of a $50m (£38m) joint US-UK project. But, as he discovered, doing science in one of the most extreme environments on Earth is not easy. Filming by Jemma Cox Please subscribe HERE bit.ly/1rbfUog

Hundreds of foreign nationals are being evacuated from Wuhan, the centre of China's coronavirus outbreak, as more deaths and cases were confirmed. Australia plans to quarantine its evacuees on Christmas island 2,000km (1,200 miles) from the mainland. Japan, the US and the EU are also repatriating their citizens. British Airways has suspended all flights to and from mainland China, as the UK's Foreign Office warned against "all but essential travel" there. Several other airlines have taken similar measures. United Airlines and Cathay Pacific are restricting flights, while Lion Air - one of the region's biggest airlines - is stopping flights to China from Saturday. Cathay Pacific has also suspended inflight trolley services, changed some aspects of its meal offer, and stopped giving out hot towels, pillows, blankets and magazines in an effort to prevent the virus spreading. US President Donald Trump has presented his long-awaited Middle East peace plan, promising to keep Jerusalem as Israel's undivided capital. He proposed an independent Palestinian state and the recognition of Israeli sovereignty over West Bank settlements. Standing alongside Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, Mr Trump said his proposals "could be the last opportunity" for Palestinians. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas dismissed the plans as a "conspiracy". "I say to Trump and Netanyahu: Jerusalem is not for sale, all our rights are not for sale and are not for bargain. And your deal, the conspiracy, will not pass," he said in a televised address from Ramallah in the West Bank. Please subscribe HERE bit.ly/1rbfUog

President Trump has unveiled his plans for what he claims is a credible peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians, including a promise to keep Jerusalem as Israel's undivided capital. Mr Trump announced the proposals at the White House alongside the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The President said the deal 'would work' but no Palestinian officials were involved and they have rejected the proposals. At the heart of the conflict is a dispute over land ever since the creation of the state of Israel in 1948. SARS appeared in 2003, seventeen years ago. Since then there have been several attempts at producing human coronavirus vaccines. All have failed at the animal testing stage and there are currently NO SARS or MERS vaccines approved for human application. The unsuccessful attempts have all produced Antibody Dependent Enhancement of the virus, making it far worse. SARS CoV2 isn't the influenza virus, and COVID10 isn't "the flu".

How to Investigate an Outbreak: And the Band Played On: Epidemiology is the study of the frequency and distribution of disease and other health related factors in a defined population. Other factors included may be virulence of the pathogen, the portals of exit and entry, the course of the disease as well as surveillance. When an outbreak is suspected in an area, the starting point for the investigation usually begins with local health officials. The local health department may request help from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), which is the principle tracking agency. The steps in an outbreak investigation are as follows: 1) Prepare for Field Work 2) Establish the Existence of Outbreak 3) Verify the Diagnosis 4) Define and Identify Cases 5) Describe and Orient Data 6) Develop Hypothesis link 7) Evaluate the Hypothesis Refine Hypothesis 9) Implement Control and Prevention Measures 10) Communicate Findings We will look at each one of these steps individually to see how a local health agency would begin to track a potential outbreak, to determine if an outbreak is occurring, the putative causative agent, the potential mode of transmission and to suggest possible prevention measures. The local health department would be the starting point for an investigation. As we examine these steps, I will provide some examples from outbreaks we have discussed in class. In each case, I will try to relate the steps from the Esherichia coli outbreak from bagged spinach we discussed earlier in the year as reported in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly report www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5538a4.htm Epidemiology, 5th Edition CONTENTS SECTION I The Epidemiologic Approach to Disease and Intervention CHAPTER 1 Introduction CHAPTER 2 The Dynamics of Disease Transmission CHAPTER 3 The Occurrence of Disease: I. Gold has no intrinsic or utilitarian value . it just has extrinsic value. It is outrageous it should back a currency or means of exchange . It is the economic and financial setup which determines prosperity and a fair distribution of wealth . That wealth is measured in food, medical care, public infrastructure, flourishing small businesses, clean water, technology . It is the time in history where neoliberal economics , consumption, production and luxury goods take a back seat to necessities and decent lives for the majority of people

Probably in Europe there are more cases than we know. In Italy all the dead people died for other problems ( they were all very old, with heart disease, cancer..) but the after-death control showed they had coronavirus as well .. Most of the infected are symptonless... we know of the infected just because all the population of some areas are checked... nobody knows what would happen if all the population were checked.. I was told that in Africa, where thousand of Chinese live and there are still hundreds of flight daily African countries-China, there are a lot of infected people, but since there ,the health systems almost doesn't exist, nobody knows... but we have to remember , first of all, that coronovirus is just a new kind of flu for which we have no antibodies yet

People dying and they keep shoving this economic effect down our throats. Obviously the economy will suffer and ....? What about finding a cure and talking about how people are coping. The ethics are a bit adulterated with all this media.

This new law is good for British Citizens. If there is a shortage of labour, the price of labour goes up. Look at the why the UK gov had to introduce the statute of labourers in 1351 after the plague. People demanded higher wages cause there was a massage shortage of labour and employers were pissed off paying out more wages; so the gov made it illegal to ask for higher wages. This gov is doing to opposite to that!!

You know they're bullshiting when they say they're looking for a cure and antidote.. You can't cure a virus. They woukd have found one by now for seasonal flu if that was the case.. Its airborne. Not even flu prevention vaccines stop the flu or symptoms.

Thank goodness. Makes people question how we have abused the Chinese people, allowing them to be slaves, making cheap stuff so we can live as queens and kings in the West......Soooooo........COVID-19 is making sure we SEE what happens when we accept and allow others to be abused and do nothing about it, and even worse, when WE PROFIT from it!!! No one wants to see it when there is no pain, thus we will have to go through pain together so that we " might" learn to take care of ourselves for real and also for one another for real!! This will make us see too, what is really important money or LIFE!!! One of these is really valuable and that one cannot change, and one we can change!! Do you think that what earth produces will disappear if money disappear? Do you think that what you know about how to make things will leave you if money disappears? Will oil evaporate if there is no money? hahahah.....time to question what is really important.

Amazing that most people are still not wearing masks in public places. It should be made mandatory under emercency law. All airlines should supply passengers with masks also, as well as hotels, supermarkets and theatres.
